Work at height
“Work at height remains one of the leading causes of death and serious injury worldwide.”

Work at height is a fundamental part of many industries, from construction and building cleaning to the installation and maintenance of infrastructure. However, working at height carries significant risks if the proper precautions are not taken.

What is work at height?

Work at height is defined as any task carried out more than 1.8 meters above ground level. This can include activities such as working on scaffolding, ladders, roofs, elevated platforms or any raised surface that poses a risk of falling.

What are the risks?

The risks associated with work at height are numerous and can have serious consequences. Some of the most common risks include:

  1. Falls from height: this is the most obvious risk. A fall can result in serious injury or even death.
  2. Bumps and impacts: when working at height, workers can strike objects or structures, which can cause injuries.
  3. Falling objects: in addition to the personal hazard, objects can fall from height and injure people below.
  4. Adverse weather conditions: weather conditions such as wind and rain can increase the risks of working at height.

What preventive measures should I take?

To minimize the risks associated with work at height, it is essential to follow these preventive measures:

  1. Risk assessment: before starting any work at height, a risk assessment must be carried out to identify hazards and take appropriate measures.
  2. Training: all workers must receive work-at-height safety training, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  3. Use of appropriate equipment: always use the recommended personal protective equipment, such as harnesses, helmets and suitable footwear.
  4. Equipment maintenance: make sure the equipment is in good condition and follow the maintenance guidelines.
  5. Communication: establish effective communication between workers at height and those on the ground.

What are the fall protection systems?

Fall protection systems are essential to ensure safety when working at height. The main protection systems include:

  1. Guardrails and handrails: installed along platform edges to prevent falls.
  2. Safety nets: used to catch workers in the event of a fall.
  3. Safety harnesses: worn to secure the worker and prevent falls from height.
  4. Lifelines: provide a secure anchor point for workers.
  5. Scaffolding and elevated platforms: provide a safe surface for working at height.

What is a Fall Factor?

The fall factor refers to the distance a person falls before their protection system arrests the fall. Understanding it is important for selecting the right equipment. The lower the fall factor, the shorter the distance fallen before the fall is arrested.

What is Fall Clearance?

Fall clearance is the minimum distance between a worker in free fall and a lower surface or obstacle. This distance must be sufficient to allow the fall protection system to arrest the fall before the worker hits the ground or any hazardous object.
